Curfew hours for minors

By Molly Murray

It's that time of year when everyone is out and about because of the nice weather -- maybe a little earlier than normal. In any event, there is a curfew law that I'm sure not everyone is quite clear on.

Following are the ages and times for the the law. Please make sure to pass along to your family and friends in the city. If you see children out on the street past curfew time, please call 911. An officer can check to see if they are in violation and take the appropriate action.

Curfew hours for minors 12 through 16 years of age: Sunday through Thursday 10 pm until 6 am of the following day; Friday and Saturday 11 pm until 6 am of the following day.

The curfew hours for minors under the age of 12: Sunday through Thursday 8:30 pm until 6:00 am of the following day; Friday and Saturday 9 pm until 6 am of the following day.

Minor means any person under 17 years of age.

Parent means a person who is a natural parent, adoptive parent, or stepparent of another person; or at least 18 years of age and authorized by a parent or guardian to have the care and custody of a minor.

Public place means any place to which the public or a substantial group of the public has access and includes, but is not limited to, streets, highways, and the common areas of schools, hospitals, apartment houses, office buildings, transport facilities and shops.

Penalties: A person who violates a provision of this chapter is guilty of a separate offense for each day or part of a day during which the violation is committed, continued, or permitted. Each offense, upon conviction, is punishable by a fine not to exceed $500.00.

Curfew law: No child under the age of 17 can be outside or in a public place without a parent or guardian appointed by the parent, as stated. The Curfew Municipal Code will be enforced.
