Andersen open house Wednesday

By Marjorie Isaacson

Andersen Elementary School, 1148 N. Honore St., has been reborn as the LaSalle II Magnet School.

The curriculum for students in kindergarten through third grade is modeled on the successful LaSalle Language Academy, 1734 N. Orleans in Old Town. LaSalle II will focus primarily on acquisition of a second language. Classes will be taught in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

Principal Suzanne Velasquez-Sheehy will be showing off the renovated building on Oct. 22 at an open house for the community. Tours times are 5-5:30 p.m. and 6-6:30 p.m., with a presentation at 5:30 p.m.

The school has a new computer lab and has received a $30,000 library grant. Neighborhood residents are already enjoying the new playground equipment installed this summer.

Admission to LaSalle II will be determined by lottery, with 50% of the spaces reserved for neighborhood residents. See for an online application.

Hey, two parents have shared with me information as it pertains to LaSalle. Wanted to share with the parents of Friends of the Park, EVA, EVN and Chicago Grand Neighbors.

    One parent wrote:
LaSalle II announced today that the school was awarded a federal grant for the 2008-2010 school years. As a result, it will be able to serve students in the 4th through 6th grades starting next year (instead of one and two
years from now as planned). The grant will also allow enhancements to occur NOW that we thought we would have to do fundraisers for over the next few years (ex. upgrade language labs w/ technology, add fine arts
    teachers/programs, more field trips, etc.)

    Another parent wrote:
LaSalle II's program is expanding to include higher grades and that the school is getting a "state of the art" language lab with programs such as Rosetta Stone and other software.

Reminder that there is an open house today, so if you were on the fence in terms of wanting information, now might be a good time to go check it out.
