EVA at 30: Celebration plans

Minutes for May 7, 2012 board meeting
By Kok Keng (KK) Goh

Guest Speaker for June
Two business presentations for June 4 meeting: Comrade Cycles (Scott Rappe to follow up?) and Wicker Park Athletic Club (Gladys Anselmo to follow up). No other scheduled speakers.

Sign Installation Update
Hanging brackets purchased. Clamp bands and heavy duty fasteners required to hold up to wear and tear. Suggestion to hang a few signs and evaluate effectiveness (Tom to follow-up).

Sidewalk Cafe update
Mana Food Bar failed recent sidewalk inspections, several semi-permanent structures still have to be removed and follow-up from city to ensure compliance.

Anthem is lacking plants on their al fresco dining area (requires 50% coverage).
Suggestion to promote local businesses that are compliant with city regulations and improve EVA's business relations.

Square-Up Credit Card update
Device and account acquired, log-on and processing via mobile devices may be rather slow though

30th Anniversary Celebration Planning
Anniversary event will be Sept. 13 at Chicago Public Library West Town Branch, which EVA helped preserve. A portion of the proceeds will support library programming. Anniversary newsletter to portray what East Village community was, currently is, and what it could be. Flyers to go out soon promoting anniversary fundraising dinner June 20. Several businesses have generously made donations including iPhones and jewelry.

Pop-Up Art Project
Did not discuss (absence of Meghan Quinn).

Planning, Preservation & Development
Site at Miller Lumber might have issues with doorway recesses on ground floor.  Developers seem comfortable with maintaining original plans and not building to maximum unit capacity/height.

Liquor Moratorium letter was drafted, to be posted for comments/review.  Board comments include:
(1) Restructure wording to be more pro-business.
(2) Highlight EVA's history of advocating the interest of EV residents.
(3) Openness to revisiting businesses that might have unique liquor licensing situations (e.g. for Starbucks locations that sell liquor, consider requesting Starbucks to lobby/apply for special permit).
(4) Make space for EV resident signatures on letter as a sign of affirmation.
